My first review ever. And I will keep it short. Like our visit to El Haragan. We stopped in Grand Rapids during our road trip around Lake Michigan. We consulted Yelp and based on the reviews ended up at El Haragan. Wish we hadn't. Service was beyond prompt. It was hurried. Felt pushy. Everyone was friendly, but their interaction felt scripted. Not sincere. Food was not bad, but certainly not great. Solidly mediocre. My 7-year-old said (unprompted), "Daddy, this food is not so good. My meat is dry." From the mouth of babes... Overall, it was salty and single-note. Completely safe for picky kids, but not at all interesting or satisfying for adults. Oh, I almost forgot. Of the five dishes we ordered, three of us found hair in our food. That's 60%!

I was concerned that there were few cars in the parking lot. However. I checked Yelp and the reviews looked promising, so I decided to check it out. Yes! Best decision of the day! ! ! The food was excellent. I had their Mexican shrimp cocktail and authentic tacos. All I can say is, "wow! ". The food tasted excellent. Fresh ingredients and outstanding flavor. I'm surprised the parking lot is not packed. You really need to check this place out if you enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine. Highly recommend. Great prices, service, and best of all...excellent food.

Food was excellent except chips were a little over cooked and the salsa we very thin and too mild but this is personal preference. The 22 Oz margarita is just Ok, not as tart as a lot of margaritas, they didn't have a choice for higher end margaritas . the server was very professional and the place appeared clean. there was one fruit fly buzzing around our table. I would try it again.

This was just okay food. Pretty bland for Mexican food, and when I ordered water the waiter brought me a glass of water with 1 ice cube in it. When I asked for ice water he said it was not good for my throat. Pretty silly! Good bland food though and good service.

All around great independent mexican restaurant. Wait staff friendly and always able to help with choices. Portions are big and priced right. Have been there for lunch and dinner, always a great meal.

Been there twice first time food was excellent. Second time food was just ok. Very big portions both times. Tried the fried ice cream and the cereal that it was covered with was so stale it tasted like it was a year old. The place itself is clean and presentable. The staff is very friendly, even though our waiter was hard to understand do to his very heavy accent. He didn't know the word caramel, my wife and I had to repeat it several times and he brought chocolate instead of caramel on the ice cream.

I love this restraunt to relax and have a drink with good food. The chicken is very good and the burritos are good size. The waiter is very friendly and the food is well priced

3 burritos ordered, 2 california and one gigante. All were good. Salsa could handle a little more heat for my personal taste. If you like mild it will be perfect for you.

I was reluctant to try this place since I always enjoy El burrito down the street. But, we tried it and are so happy we did! Had shrimp in a creamy Chipotle sauce - totally delicious. The Jamaica margarita is divine. The chips and salsa/bean dip/queso were top notch as well. We'll be coming back often.

After reading all the reviews must say I was a little disappointed in the place. My first warning should have been the lack of a crowd on a Friday night. Second out waiter was non-existent. The chips and salsa were mediocre at best. I ordered a strawberry margarita...more like colored slush in a big glass. Our entrees were pretty pathetic. I ordered la favorita...yea, not so much. The food had little to no flavor so I was forced to put the habanero sauce on everything. Probably won't be going back.

S, we discovered that this restaurant and one of our favorites from the southeast part of town, El Arriero, have common ownership. In fact, the menus are pretty much identical. This is great news! The menu is large and varied. Besides their named entrees, you can make just about any type of combination plate that you want. On the most recent visit, I had La Favorita, which has a beef enchilada, a chicken enchilada and a wet tostada type of item. Delicious! Suzy had chicken chimmy, which she loves and aways gets. They start you out with chips and salsa and drinks, which are AGAH! (All good as hell!) Helpful and attentive wait staff. Nice, bright decor inside. Plenty of parking outside. We are sure to return many more times!

The place was clean, service was prompt and friendly amongst the entire waitstaff (multiple people checked on us), and the prices were fair. The only concern I had was the food was extremely bland. I don't think there were any spices or seasonings added to anything, or even peppers and onions. It reminded me of cafeteria food. Everything was prepared well and seemed fresh, it was just extremely bland. Two people in our parties ordered tacos which came out in a pool of sauce from the enchiladas, and the tacos just fell apart from having soaked in the sauce. The blandness was unfortunate as the prices are pretty good and there is a lot of potential. I hope they figure out how to make the food tastier.

Kind of a disappointment, food wise. Had the lunch steak fajitas, $7.99. The fajitas were tough, and not much food for the money. The onions and green peppers were barely cooked, and the fajitas does not come with cheese, lettuce, pico, sc or anything else you would expect!!! I ordered a sour cream, got hit for an additional buck. When I asked about the missing items, I was told they only come with dinner fajitas. Really??? I would have rather gotten fajitas from Applebee's. Ugh.

Some friends had visited this restaurant for the first time a few weeks ago and raved about the food. So of course we had to join them when they made a return trip. I'm terribly picky about my tacos and for me if a new restaurant can get the simplest item on the menu correct then usually everything else will as good or better. So I first ordered off the a la carte menu and tried three tacos. Basically ground beef, lettuce and cheese. Shells are freshly made right there and the tacos were well made. They did not skimp on the ground beef. My other mainstay is chips and cheese. After finishing three tacos I just ordered a basic chips and cheese with beef (based on the price), I figured this would be a small serving. No way, large plate heaping with chips and cheese sprinkled with ground beef. I was stuffed. The friends I went with ordered tamales, tacos, and a host of other items. Everything was given high marks by all of us. The servers are pretty attentive and the place was not packed with customers. I think people are still discovering this place. It's just been added to my list of favorite places to dine out. Large menu selection and very reasonable prices. Nice variety of drinks are available, beer selection is fairly standard. Not a lot of exotic beers offered. Overall a nice quiet, relaxed dining experience.

(A slight edit from 5 to 4 stars only because I realized I should save 5 stars for places that serve meats like lengua, cabeza, tripas, etc.) This place has become a Thursday night staple for us. (My day off is Friday, so Thursday's highlight is the large frozen margarita & great Mexican food.) I have become a big fan of the burrito chipotle - steak and chicken with a delicious chipotle sauce that's just tangy enough and just hot enough. My wife likes the chori quesadilla w/chicken. It's listed as an appetizer, but is a big meal in itself. One of the best times at El Haragan came as a result of one of our toughest times here. On Cinco de Mayo the service was slow - NOT for lack of hustle, but because a couple of staff members hadn't shown up for work. The place was packed, and our waiter was frazzled from covering so many extra tables. We tried to be encouraging and understanding as he apologized and bounced from group to group. The food, though slow to arrive, was great as always. On our next trip back, we had the same waiter, we placed our order, and suddenly he recognized us from that night. He thanked us profusely for coming again and giving him another chance. (He'd served us before May 5th and done so very well.) We appreciated the extra attention and acknowledgement. We've brought others here and they've enjoyed whatever they've ordered.

Hidden treasure as far as Mexican restaurants go. We come here often - the food is always amazing, beer is cold and margaritas are awesome! Huge portions, very reasonably priced and great service! Highly recommend El Haragan!

El Haragan just opened and we went there for the first time the other day. We were very pleased with the food. I had the chicken fajitas and it was very good. My wife had the soft chimichanga which was also very good. I think I'll get that chimi next time I go back. Portion sizes are good for the money, almost too much food. I took home about half of my fajitas. The plate was heaping with food. You get the usual chips and salsa when you sit down at the table. Salsa was a little spicy for what you usually get at the local restaurants, but I like spicy. We also ordered guacamole to go with the chips, it was so so. But I am very particular about my guacamole. It has to have the right salt and lime juice balance in it, this one was a little bland. As with most any new restaurant they are still working some kinks out on the service side. There was some confusion as to whether we paid the waitress at the table or took it up to the register but apparently you can do either. Overall a very good experience and we will be back again soon and probably soon after that.

Great Find. Authentic Mexican so don't expect any fufu dishes. Portions are decent, beer is cold and Margaritas were delicious. I look forward to returning with friends and family. Very helpful waiter who took extra time to explain menu items.

Upon moving to the Grand Rapids area earlier this year we have tried many of the Mexican restaurants in metro GR and find ourselves returning to El Haragan again and again. The food seems to be much better than other area Mexican restaurants, and their prices are reasonable and service excellent. Our one complaint about El Haragan is the one extremely rude and unfriendly waiter. I'm not sure of his name but he's one of the only male waiters there. He's impatient and easily "put off" if you ask questions. If you ask for a drink refill, upon bring it to you he holds the drink cup directly in your face until you take it from him, as opposed to gently setting it on the table in front of you. (I chuckle when he does this as its over-the-top unprofessional and rude) On a recent visit our young daughter ordered a hamburger with only mustard off the kids menu. When he brought it out the burger had cheese and ketchup on it. When we asked for for the correct burger he made it clear he was unhappy, then upon returning with a hamburger he almost threw it at our 5-yearr old daughter causing some of the french fries to slide off the plate as it landed in front of her. No matter, we love their food and highly recommend this restaurant.... Just be sure you get a female waitress and not a male waiter.

Went on a Friday evening a few weeks ago. Seated quickly, service was excellent. Chips and salsa came right away-salsa has better flavor (meaning it actually has flavor) than what I've received at El Burito Loco/Cinco De Mayo. I'll probably order something different next time. My tacos were good and prepared correctly, just not the taste I was looking for. That's my fault, not their's. My son's burito (I don't recall which one he had) was really good. Large enough to fill him up-no mean feat-he proclaimed it to be excellent. Both meals came with beans and rice on the side. Overall food is pretty good, prices are fair. I think I'll take the whole family next time.

We went there tonight for dinner (3 kids 2 adults). I liked the fact that they had 3 sizes of Margaritas to choose from. I only got the small (12 oz.) but it was just the right amount and a fair price. My husband and I shared the dinner for 2 fajitas, which were delicious! The kids meals were good too. The prices are pretty much the same as other local Mexican eateries (possibly a buck or 2 cheaper) and include chips and salsa. The service was fantastic, our drinks were always full and the food came out very quickly. The ambiances was nice. A few flat screen T.Vs and a full bar, but also a great place for families. This will be a regular for us.

Don't seam to have it together, got the combo to try a little of every thing. Taco meat was so hot burnt my mouth, every other item was uncooked givin it two stars the manager gave my money back. But I'll never go back... There were more staff than customers and the service was terrible considering the food wasn't cooked was amazed at how long every thing took. If ur in a hurry this also ain't the place

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
